Interview with Airbase

•October 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

One of the most productive trance producers is, without a doubt, Swedish producer Airbase. He’s produced several strong tracks and remixes, using the Scarab alias for several of them. One of these beauties is ‘Vagabond’. The song retrieved legendary status, with its effective melody, thumping base and pure trance sound written all over. Up until this day, Airbase is still being praised for his characteristic sound.

The Airbase story began in 1994, when Jezper Söderlund got his hands on some software and started to grow interest on producing music. Within years, Jezper worked hard to gain knowledge and understanding in how to produce, arrange and write melodies. He started buying some tangible equipment and learned even more. After discovering Reason, he soon had ‘Airbase – Emotion’ ready and steady, and in 2002 his first release and record deal was a fact. Many tracks followed. And before he knew it, Jezper felt the need to produce under more than ‘just’ the Airbase guise. A range of 12 aliases were used, with among them the ‘Scarab’ guise. On the 24th of November 2003, Scarab’s first release ‘Vagabond’ was released on Armada’s ‘A State of Trance’ label and got featured on Armin van Buuren’s ‘Universal Religion’ compilation as well. Now, about 5 years later, ‘Vagabond’ still hasn’t left the memories of trance lovers and will always resound in the clubs, holding a permanent position in the record cases of some of the biggest DJ’s around. Time to look back and ahead with Airbase himself.

Flashback: Mark Otten – Mushroom Therapy

•September 30, 2008 • Leave a Comment

He is being described as ‘one of Holland’s best kept secrets’ and a ‘producing genius’. His ‘Mushroom Therapy’ was an instant hit and 5 years after its release, it’s considered to be a real classic. The track was praised for its deep progressive sound with a trancy touch and amazing little details gently toying around with the bass. ‘Mushroom Therapy’, released on the Armind imprint on December 15th 2003, is not even close to dusty. Same goes for Mark, cause there’s a whole lot more to expect from this talented producer. There’s absolutely no restrictions or boundaries for this open minded guy. His sound ranges from progtrance to techy house and addictive rock. As long as it’s emotional and melodic. While some producers think of it as hasty business, Mark takes the time to perfectionize his productions and takes them to an even higher level. Whether it’s under his Rio Addicts or Lightscape guise, he does it all with great passion. It’s time to look back and ahead and ask Mark what’s been going on in the meanwhile. And of course, whether it involves mushrooms!

Joint Operations Centre
Irishman John O’callaghan is definitely keeping his options open. If he’s not producing some bomb of a track under his real name, he’s producing one under his Joint Operation Centre. With a sturdy, stable sound he does a lot of remixes and productions best to be described as catchy, efficient and diverse.

A while ago, he caught the attention with his powerful ‘Shortwave’ track, his heavy remix of ‘Bissen – Quicksand’ and on top of that his Joint Operation Centre remix of ‘Timmy & Tommy – Full Tiltin’ is currently being hammered by all the big names around.
